My Carry-On: In Flight Essentials

Whenever I’m flying, especially if it’s a long flight, there’s a certain number of things I absolutely must have in my carry on. There’s nothing worse than sitting down on a long haul flight only to realize that something you need is packed in your checked luggage. I don’t like being without something I feel I need.

My list of things only changes if the kind of trip changes, otherwise it’s a pretty static list of items. If I’m traveling to see my sister, I bring minimal things as it’s not an overly long flight or trip. If I am going to Europe, which often entails an entire day/night of travel, I bring the items below.

Here’s my essentials for long flights:

  • Passport

  • Phone & Charger

  • Laptop & Charger

  • Notebook & Pen (in case I want to jot down something or sketch out an idea)

  • Sunglasses (I’m probably gonna want them as soon as I leave the airport in my destination)

  • Toiletry bag (toothbrush, toothpaste, makeup remover wipe, etc)

  • Lysol wipes (I always thoroughly wipe down the tray table and arm rest as soon as I get seated)

  • Hand Sanitizer

  • Makeup Wipes (I love to freshen up by “washing” my face before landing at my destination)

  • Makeup Bag

  • Eyemask (so I can catch some zzz’s)

  • Headphones

  • Snack (Protein bar)

  • Wallet

  • Water bottle

  • Scarf/wrap (doubles as a blanket)

As I mentioned earlier, this is primarily my go-to list for long flights rather than let’s say a short 2 hour flight somewhere in which case I can make due with a lot fewer items since I’ll be at my destination a lot sooner.
